Tower Centre to be sold

A MULTI-million pound deal to sell Hoddesdon's Tower Centre looks likely to be struck, the Mercury can exclusively reveal. Negotiations to flog the failing shopping complex are ongoing, with urban regeneration specialists Centros lined up to buy it from UBS Global Asset Management, which redeveloped the centre after buying it in 2007.

Canoeist tried to save drowning friend, inquest told

AN experienced canoeist wept as he told an inquest how he tried to save his friend from drowning in the River Lea at Wormley. Mark Trant said he repeatedly tried to throw a lifeline to Sanjai Chauhan, pictured, of Pytt Field, Harlow, after he capsized on the river and at one point got his hand within a foot (0.3m) of the 19-year-old before he disappeared under the water.

The town has an excellent range of coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and fast food outlets. In addition to a recently-refurbished Library and the John Warner Sports Centre, there is Barclay Park with its pond and children’s playground, plus a large Civic Hall offering a diverse programme of popular entertainment, and a popular nightclub. Hoddesdon is at the epicentre of an assortment of leisure activities - the famous Rye House Speedway and RSPB Nature Reserve are just to the north; the Lea Valley Park with its sailing facilities, watersports and riverside walks is on the Eastern edge; the enormously popular Paradise Wildlife Park is a couple of miles to the South; while delightful woodland trails through the ancient Broxbourne Woods can be found on the Western outskirts of the town. Hoddesdon Shopping

Hoddesdon offers a great shopping experience with an excellent combination of high quality independent retailers, major banks and building societies, national chain stores and four supermarkets, plus a twice weekly outdoor market. There is a good selection of hairdressers, card shops, chemists, fashion stores, florists, jewellers and opticians. In addition to the main post office, the town also features individual shops specialising in fishing tackle, hand made furniture, books and weddings.
